Mastoiditis
SYMPTOMS include redness, tenderness and swelling over the mastoid bone that
is located behind the ear, discharge from the ear canal, fever and ear pain.
CAUSES. The mastoid bone may become inflamed from untreated or inadequately
treated infection of the middle ear. This should be taken seriously because
of the closeness to the brain. It could lead to brain abscess or meningitis.
TREATMENT. Antibiotic treatment required. Surgery probably not needed.
